JPD Community Ministries COMMUNITY MINISTRIES IN OUR DISTRICT Beacon House Community Ministry Beacon House Community Ministry, Inc. is a civic and social service organization that supports the youth and families of the Ward Five Communities in Northeast Washington, DC. A long-term, family-focused program that is deeply rooted in the community, Beacon House’s mission is to empower and enrich the lives of at-risk youth and families through the use of creative, multicultural partnerships. Through mentoring and other youth development activities, Beacon House programs strive to reduce delinquency, decrease the elementary, junior high, and high school dropout rate, teen pregnancy, and improve the academic achievement of students in its target area. Open Door Housing Fund Open Door Housing Fund is a community development loan fund of $15 million providing financing for affordable housing, transitional housing and childcare facilities in the JPD region. ODHF depends on UUs for support. It seeks socially responsible investments and donations from UUs, and their congregations across the nation. Now in its 17th year of operation, the ODHF has provided over $12 million in loans to support over $135 million in housing development. The governing board includes representatives from participating UU congregations. Unitarian Universalists for Social Justice MISSION A Unitarian Universalist partnership for furthering our principles on human dignity, justice and compassion through service, community development, advocacy, education and interfaith cooperation. · Bring about sustainable change in urban concerns in the Baltimore/Washington/Northern Virginia region · Foster spiritual growth within UU congregations through social justice work that affirms the inherent worth and dignity of every person and promotes justice, equity and compassion in human relations PURPOSE UUSJ is a resource and development center for Unitarian Universalist social justice activities in the Baltimore/Washington/Northern Virginia region. We provide communication and information sharing, technical assistance, support for direct community services, public policy advocacy support, spiritual inspiration, education and training, networking and regional coordination. CURRENT FOCUS UUSJ’s current priorities are to stimulate participation among our member congregations and organizations in activities focusing on freedom to marry for all persons, environmental justice, health care, affordable housing and support for Beacon House and Banner Neighborhood children’s programs.
