Goalie Goal: The Soo Greyhounds' Carter George Shines in a Win Over the London Knights
In a chilly night at the GFL Memorial Gardens, the Soo Greyhounds' Carter George brought the heat, both between the pipes and on the scoreboard, as he led his team to a victory over the London Knights.
Amidst the frigid temperatures, two Greyhounds stood out for different reasons. Carter George, the goaltender, continued his impressive start with the team since his acquisition from the Owen Sound Attack before the OHL trade deadline. Meanwhile, Justin Cloutier, a forward, returned to his old stomping grounds and made an early impact.
George's solid performance included scoring his second OHL goal, contributing to the Greyhounds' 5-2 win over the Knights. He knew he'd try to score when the Knights pulled their goalie, and his goal was a bit more special than his first, scored at home with a more enthusiastic crowd.
Greyhounds coach John Dean praised George's even-keeled demeanor and his ability to pump up the crowd when he scores. George also made 28 saves, including a crucial one late in the game when London's goalie was on the bench for an extra attacker.
The game saw the Greyhounds take control after an even opening period, with a strong second period that Dean loved. However, the third period saw them rely too much on George, approaching the game with caution.
For the Knights, assistant coach Rick Steadman noted their mistakes and George's impact. George's performance, including his goal and saves, justified his trade.
Justin Cloutier's return to the Greyhounds lineup was also notable. He had a rough time with E. coli, nearly ending his hockey career. Cloutier, an overage forward, was pleased with his first game back, feeling good despite some tiredness.
The game's highlights included Jeremy Martin's goal 6:05 into the second period, Quinn McKenzie's goal 6:35 later, and Marco Mignosa's goal with 1:07 left in the period. The Greyhounds sealed the win with empty-net goals by George and Colin Fitzgerald.
Mignosa, Reid, Martin, and McKenzie contributed goals and assists, while Medvedev made 30 saves for the Knights. The Greyhounds' win improves their record to 27-14-1-1, while the Knights fall to 25-16-3-0.
The Greyhounds continue their season, hosting the North Bay Battalion for two games at the GFL Memorial Gardens on Saturday and Sunday.
