Weather maps are indicating a potential snowstorm heading our way, and it's not just us feeling the chill. The Met Office's predictions have us bracing for a temperature drop, bringing wintry conditions back to the UK.
After a brief respite from the freezing temperatures at the start of the year, it seems Mother Nature is reminding us it's still winter. But here's where it gets controversial: the Met Office's outlook suggests a colder period ahead, with snow showers likely across the hills of Scotland and northern England.
According to WXCharts by Metdesk, the snow is expected to start falling from Tuesday next week (January 27), with Greater Manchester and much of the UK experiencing wintry showers. And this is the part most people miss: the maps also show snow likely on Wednesday, so it's not just a one-day wonder.
Our region will feel the drop in temperatures from Sunday, with a mild 10°C today dropping to a brisk 5°C by Sunday evening. The Met Office's full forecast for the period of January 25 to February 3 paints a picture of weather systems battling high pressure, resulting in rain and showers, especially in the south and west. And with the potential for snow, it's a reminder that winter isn't over yet.
Earlier this month, Storm Goretti, a 'multi-hazard event', swept across the UK, bringing near-100mph winds and a rare red warning for the south-west of England. The impact was felt across the country, with a tragic incident in Helston, Cornwall, where a man in his 50s lost his life when a tree fell on his caravan. Flights were cancelled, trains disrupted, and schools, including those in Greater Manchester, had to close due to the extreme weather.
