The school's location, adjacent to a cluster of buildings that form the local Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) barracks and support facilities, has sparked controversy. The US and Israeli forces, which launched the attack, have not provided a clear explanation for the strike, leaving room for interpretation.
A Community's Devastation
The school was not exclusively reserved for children of military families. Shiva Amelirad, a Canada-based representative of the Coordinating Council of Iranian Teachers' Trade Associations, revealed that the school enrolled many children from the local community, particularly those who could not afford private school fees. The loss of up to 168 young girls will be devastating for Minab, a small town near the Sea of Oman, where agriculture, particularly date and citrus cultivation, is the primary industry.
Misinformation and Reality
In the aftermath of the attack, misinformation spread online. Some claimed the footage was old and shot in Pakistan, but this has been debunked. The reality is stark: the Minab school bombing is the worst mass casualty event of the US-Israeli-led attack so far, with Unesco describing it as a 'grave violation' of international law. The Iranian Red Crescent Society reported at least 555 civilian deaths across the country, while the US-based Human Rights Activist news agency reported at least 742 civilian deaths, including 176 children.
