New York's $124 Billion Medicaid Fraud: Dr. Oz Exposes Waste and Scams (2026)

New York's Medicaid program, a $124 billion taxpayer-funded behemoth, has become a hotbed of fraud and waste, according to US regulator Dr. Mehmet Oz. This eye-opening revelation has sparked a federal investigation, with Dr. Oz stating, "There are services being provided that we don't believe are legitimate, and they're costing taxpayers a fortune."

In a recent interview on 77 WABC's "Cats Roundtable," Dr. Oz, who heads the US Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, highlighted the issue. He emphasized how this dishonesty not only burdens taxpayers but also undermines the very purpose of Medicaid, which is to provide essential services to vulnerable individuals.

"The guts of the system are being stripped bare by this fraud," Dr. Oz asserted. While he didn't provide specific details, an insider revealed that his office is actively investigating various aspects of New York's extensive Medicaid program.

Medicaid, a public health insurance program for the needy, is particularly generous in New York. It covers a wide range of services, including those provided in hospitals, nursing homes, and the burgeoning home-care industry, catering to an aging population. Currently, over 6.8 million New Yorkers, a staggering 34% of the state's population, are enrolled in Medicaid.

The Post recently exposed a federal audit accusing New York drivers of defrauding the Medicaid transportation program, with up to $196 million being swindled through rides that didn't meet Medicaid requirements. This scandal is just one of many. The Post also uncovered how the state allegedly lost $1.2 billion to scammers through the Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program and how it spends up to $400 million annually on Social Adult Day Care centers, which largely duplicate senior center services.

Both of these programs, along with the Non-Emergency Medical Transportation program, were part of former Governor Andrew Cuomo's Medicaid overhauls, which have been continued by his successor, Governor Kathy Hochul.

In response, Hochul's office defended their management of the Medicaid program, citing sweeping reforms implemented in 2024 that shut down hundreds of wasteful Medicaid middlemen, saving over $2 billion for state and federal taxpayers in the past year alone. They also challenged Dr. Oz, suggesting he should tell Washington Republicans to stop undermining healthcare access for everyday New Yorkers.

This ongoing debate raises important questions about the balance between providing essential healthcare services and ensuring taxpayer funds are not misused. What are your thoughts on this controversial issue? Feel free to share your opinions in the comments!
