In the heart of Lisbon's Campo de Ourique market, amidst the usual election chatter, one candidate has everyone talking - and not just because of their promises.
Enter Candidate Vieira, the satirical savior with a twist!
Vieira, a fictional character brought to life by the talented Manuel João Vieira, is offering the Portuguese people a unique deal: Ferraris for all and wine on tap! But there's more to this campaign than meets the eye.
"Wouldn't a Ferrari be nice?" a fishmonger jokes, referring to Vieira's promise. However, not everyone is swayed by the flashy offer. Some, like the fishmonger's colleague, prefer the far-right candidate André Ventura, leader of the popular Chega party.
But here's where it gets controversial: Vieira's campaign is a satirical take on the growing anti-elite and anti-establishment sentiment in Portuguese politics. With promises like a city named Vieirópolis where AI frees people from work, and a skin-tone homogenization treatment to tackle anti-migration issues, he's turning heads and sparking debates.
And this is the part most people miss: despite having no legislative powers, the Portuguese president still holds significant influence. With the ability to dissolve parliament and call snap elections, the outcome of this election matters greatly.
"These elections mark a shift away from traditional elite-associated figures," says António Costa Pinto, a political scientist. "The independent run of Henrique Gouveia e Melo, a retired admiral, and the decision of some charismatic politicians to sit this one out, highlight this change."
Ventura, the far-right leader, is currently leading the polls, closely followed by António José Seguro of the Socialist party. But the race is far from over, and for the first time in 40 years, Portugal's presidential election is likely headed for a runoff.
In last year's general election, Ventura's Chega party capitalized on dissatisfaction with mainstream parties, becoming the main opposition. If Ventura makes it to the runoff, it could reshape right-wing representation in Portugal.
At the market, Carlos Elias, a 53-year-old fishmonger, is a firm Vieira supporter. "Candidate Vieira is the greatest! He's funny, and if elected, he'd just do what others do - stroll and take selfies."
Vieira himself isn't bothered by comparisons to Ventura. "He's part of the system, pushing old ideas as new."
His campaign, a social media sensation, features AI memes and videos mocking traditional political ads. Using crude language and popular imagery, Vieira exposes the absurdity of modern politics.
"I want to be more absurd than Donald Duck Trump," he declares. And he's been at it since 2001, running in every election since, but this time, he's gained enough support to be on the ballot.
Young supporters approach him, cheering him on. "I'll vote for Candidate Vieira," says Manuel Gil, an 18-year-old student. "He ridicules politics, drawing attention to misinformation. We're trying to stop young people from voting for Chega, and Vieira helps."
Despite polls showing him trailing behind historical parties, Vieira insists his campaign has a deeper purpose in a system plagued by apathy.
"I mix fantasy with reality. Fantasy is life, and Utopia was once politics. I want to ignite imagination, for it's through imagination that we find happiness. These days, it's all rubbish."
