The world is heating up, and it's not just the Sahara Desert that's to blame. Europe is in the midst of a scorching heatwave, with temperatures soaring to the mid-30s Celsius and beyond. But what makes this particularly fascinating is the origin of this heat: a mass of hot air from the Sahara has settled over the Iberian peninsula and spread into southern and western France, pushing temperatures widely into the low- and mid-30s Celsius. This is not just a local phenomenon; by midweek, the hot air is expected to spread north-eastwards across Europe, with maximum temperatures forecast to reach the mid-30s in several countries, including Germany, Italy, and the Czech Republic. What many people don't realize is that these readings are 9-13C above the 1991-2020 climate average, making this heatwave a significant event. In the UK, temperatures are unlikely to escape the heat entirely, with occasional plumes of warm air moving north from the continent, nudging temperatures into the mid- to high-20s Celsius across southern and eastern England. This raises a deeper question: are we witnessing the beginning of a new normal for European summers? Personally, I think the answer is yes. The heat is expected to ease for most by early next week, but the question remains: how often will we see such extreme temperatures in the future? Europe is not the only region experiencing above-average temperatures. Parts of Australia are likely to continue their mild start to winter, with a slow-moving low-pressure system drawing warm northerly air across the eastern half of the country. Temperatures in Melbourne are forecast to reach the high-teens Celsius on Tuesday and Wednesday, about 3-4C above average. While these conditions are not considered extreme, they are expected to remain a recurring feature of the Australian winter. The national Bureau of Meteorology has linked the pattern to developing El Niño conditions in the Pacific Ocean, which typically bring warmer than average daytime temperatures to much of the country. In my opinion, this is a clear sign that the world is heating up, and we need to take action to mitigate the impacts of climate change. The future of our planet depends on our ability to adapt to these changing conditions and to take steps to reduce our carbon footprint. If we don't, we risk a future where heatwaves and extreme weather events become the norm, with devastating consequences for both people and the planet.
