UEFA's New Qualifying Format: A Game-Changer for European Football
The UEFA executive committee has approved a groundbreaking change in the qualifying process for major men's tournaments, marking a significant shift in the landscape of European football. This new format, which will come into effect after Euro 2028, promises to revolutionize the way teams compete, ensuring more competitive matches and a fairer qualification process.
One of the key aspects of this reform is the introduction of larger groups in League 1, comprising three groups of 12 teams. This move addresses the issue of mismatches between larger nations and smaller, less competitive teams, such as San Marino and Andorra. By grouping teams in this manner, UEFA aims to create a more balanced and exciting competition.
The lower-ranked nations, consisting of 18 or potentially 19 teams, will be divided into three groups of six or two groups of six and one of seven within League 2. Each team will play six matches, a strategic approach to ensure a fair distribution of competition. The ranking system, based on the Nations League, will determine the teams' placement in these groups, adding an element of merit-based competition.
A crucial aspect of this new format is the qualification process itself. An unspecified number of teams from each League 1 group will secure direct qualification for the respective tournament. However, a playoff competition will be organized to accommodate those who fall short, providing a second chance for teams to secure their spot. The allocation of these spots will vary depending on the tournament, with 24 teams reaching the European Championship and 16 spots available for Europe at the World Cup.
Host nations of any European event will automatically qualify but are expected to participate in this new format. This ensures that the host country's advantage in terms of familiarity with the tournament is balanced by a competitive qualification process.
The new-look Nations League, which will be consolidated into three leagues of 18 teams (League A, League B, and League C), will commence in 2028-29. This league structure will mirror the World Cup and European Championship qualifiers, with League 2 of the latter mirroring League C of the former. The Nations League's knockout stages will remain unchanged, maintaining the integrity of the competition.
UEFA's President, Aleksander Ceferin, emphasized the benefits of this new format, stating that it will improve competitive balance, reduce dead matches, and offer a more dynamic competition to fans.
